Singapore’s rate shift and tech upswing: what it means for your business

Amelian Advisory · 18 October 2026 · 3-minute read

Growth is holding, but the world is split

The IMF’s October 2026 World Economic Outlook projects global growth of 3.1% in 2026, down from 3.5% in 2025, recovering to 3.4% in 2027. Energy prices and inflation (forecast at 4.7% this year) are the main strain, while economies tied to AI-related investment are holding up better than energy importers.

Singapore is on the stronger side of that split. Advance estimates put third-quarter 2026 GDP growth at 5.4% year on year, with manufacturing up 7.5%, and the Ministry of Trade and Industry raised its 2026 forecast to 4.5%–5.5% in August. For a company choosing a regional base, that is real economic substance: an active trade, manufacturing and technology economy.

Borrowing costs are firming

The US Federal Reserve raised its target range by 25 bps to 3.75%–4.00% on 16 September 2026. Local commercial rates have firmed too. Between late September and mid-October, DBS commercial fixed rates moved from 1.95% to 2.05% (+10 bps) and Standard Chartered from 2.28% to 2.90% (+62 bps). Floating packages priced off 3-month SORA (1.21% on 29 September) typically add a spread of about 0.58% to 1.00%, which is roughly 1.79% to 2.21% before further repricing.

What to do: compare fixed and floating structures before your next drawdown, and review idle cash against short-term deposit and T-bill yields.

EDGE Grant: one grant, 8 business areas

Since 30 September 2026 the EDGE Grant has replaced EDG, MRA and PSG. It covers over 150 activities across 8 business areas, with up to 70% support for SMEs and up to 50% for non-SMEs. Support is capped at S$100,000 per year across all activities and paid on a reimbursement basis. It is for Singapore companies, so check the conditions for your activity before planning around it. Details: EnterpriseSG EDGE Grant.

From operations to assets

Once the company, cash flow and financing are in place, many owners look at commercial or industrial premises for a permanent footprint. The ownership structure matters as much as the price.
